The Lighting Up  project is part of a partnership with the UK’s leading IoT service and solutions provider, North, and is helping the local authority create a greener future through the use of energy-efficient lighting across the city.

Aberdeen City Council has launched the Lighting Up Aberdeen initiative, in collaboration with North, a top IoT service and solutions provider in the UK. The project aims to promote sustainability and reduce carbon footprint in the city through the implementation of energy-efficient street lighting.

The project has integrated cutting-edge IoT technology to oversee and regulate over 37,000 street lighting units, improving the lighting system in the city and contributing to making Aberdeen a greener and safer place for its residents.

The new solution has eliminated the manual process of checking lights, resulting in a decrease in carbon emissions from travel. Additionally, custom dimming profiles can be used to optimize energy consumption and automated fault reporting has improved maintenance efficiency. As a result, Lighting Up Aberdeen has successfully reduced energy usage, leading to substantial savings on street lighting electricity bills and reducing carbon emissions.

Recently, North's project was honored with the Sustainable Customer Project of the Year award at the CRN Tech Impact Awards. The recognition was given in recognition of North's exceptional work with Aberdeen City Council. North provided the local authority with a city-wide LoRaWAN IoT network, including a Central Management System (CMS) based Intelligent Lighting solution.

With North's technology solutions, Aberdeen City Council is making progress towards its Net Zero Aberdeen Route Map, a comprehensive plan to reduce carbon emissions and turn Aberdeen into a smart city.

According to Scott McEwan, the interim CEO at North, "Aberdeen City Council is a visionary local authority that is harnessing the power of smart lighting to create a more environmentally friendly and secure community. He expressed his pride in being acknowledged by CRN for their role in implementing this initiative throughout the region and eagerly anticipates their ongoing collaboration with Aberdeen City Council to maximize the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) network."

"North is leading the way for positive change in the UK by collaborating with local authorities, leveraging the power of smart technology. Together, we are shaping a virtuous impact on sustainability, health, and economic prosperity."
